- Description
Lack of #C0FFEE is constructed from a grid whose light shades of turquoise, blue and green approach the digital colour #C0FFEE. The hexadecimal code resembles the word coffee, but in reality refers to a precisely defined RGB value. The title of the work thus juxtaposes the lack of coffee and the inaccessibility of digital colour: in the painting, #C0FFEE does not appear as an unambiguous value, but as a set of its imprecise, material equivalents. In the artist’s treatment of the grid, which is a programming background, it resembles a pixel structure, but its hand-painted fields break the uniformity of the digital system. Pigment, brushstroke, layering, ground texture and lighting make each grid deviate from one another. The work examines the tension between digital precision and the material instability of painting: as a numerical value, colour can be named precisely, but as a physical perception it remains constantly changing. Lack of #C0FFEE does not just describe the absence of something, but a state in which this
